North.cloud raises $60M Series B to automate cloud, AI, and data spend

North.cloud announces $60M Series B to automate cloud, data, and AI spend management.

North.cloud raised a $60M Series B led by PeakSpan Capital. The funding accelerates our work building the financial operating system for cloud, AI, and data.

Before North, I spent 13 years selling data center technology. Near the end, customers started sending me their cloud bills. They wanted help deciding whether to stay in the cloud or run their own servers.

What I found surprised me. Many couldn’t say what basic storage was costing them. Their bills were full of hidden charges and line items no one could explain. Most companies had no real system for understanding their cloud spend, let alone controlling it. In 2023, I started North out of my garage to change that. Three years later, the problem has evolved far beyond the cloud bill, and so have we.

Today, we’re announcing our $60M Series B, and it’s a huge moment for all of us. PeakSpan Capital led the round, with participation from Litquidity Ventures, Companyon Ventures, Alpaca, Uncommon Denominator, Gaingels, and Mana Ventures.

Cloud, AI, and data are now one of the biggest costs a company carries. We’re building the system to manage all of it, and this round lets us go faster.

The funding matters, but what matters more to me is what got us here. There’s no North without the awesome people who work here. There’s also no North without the customers who’ve trusted us with their business and partnership. You’re defined as a company by how good your people are and how great your customers are. That’s everything.

Below, I’ll share how North started, how it’s grown, and where we’re headed. You can also read the full press release here.

How North set out to automate FinOps

North started with rate optimization: helping companies buy the right cloud commitments at the right time. It sounds simple, but it’s one of the hardest calls in cloud finance. Providers reward you for committing one to three years in advance, so you have to predict usage long before you can know it. Most companies end up getting it wrong, leaving savings on the table or paying for capacity they never use. Our first product automated those decisions, taking the guesswork out of every purchase.

We first launched in the spring of 2023 and as we talked to customers, we found a much bigger problem than commitments. Most large companies were juggling spreadsheets and five to seven tools just to manage cloud spend. Someone had to stitch that data together and walk through it in monthly meetings. Engineers lost hours they could have spent building, and finance still waited on answers.

It became clear that the biggest thing holding companies back from great FinOps was time. Every tool on the market asked teams for more of it, and that approach doesn’t scale. So we asked a different question: what if FinOps worked like autopilot in a Tesla? You choose the destination, and the system handles the driving.

For us, AI is a vessel for a better experience. It takes manual work off teams’ plates, so they can focus on decisions that matter. A 100-person startup should get the same quality of FinOps as the biggest spenders on AWS.

Since then, the job has only gotten bigger. Infrastructure spend now stretches across multiple clouds, AI model providers, and data platforms. Each one has its own pricing, its own data, and its own rules, and every new provider adds to the work.

Underneath that complexity, there are only two ways to save money. You either pay less for what you use, or you use less. North is built around optimizing both:

  • Pay less: Teams get deep discounts with month-to-month flexibility, or automated purchasing for commitments they own. It works across AWS, GCP, and Azure, and the same engine will extend to GPUs, SaaS licenses, and AI model providers over time.
  • Use less: North finds over- and under-provisioned resources and flags unusual spend with its likely root cause. That coverage keeps expanding to more services.
  • Plan ahead: Teams can forecast spend, set budgets, and get alerts before costs drift.
  • Understand all of it: Teams can break down spend and map every dollar to a team or customer, ready for showback. Every shift in spend can be explained by Noros, our FinOps Agent, in plain English. With AI and data integrations, teams see their entire infrastructure spend in one place.

Together, these pieces make up the autopilot we set out to build. Teams choose where they want to go, and North does the heavy lifting to get them there. Engineers get their time back to build, and finance gets answers without waiting on monthly meetings. Instead of spreadsheets and scattered tools, companies get one intelligent system that grows with them.

What’s next for North

In our first year, I talked to almost 100 companies. Most of my calendar was customer conversations, and nearly everything we built started with what they told us. We built something customers could plug in right away, then kept listening.

That shaped how people experience North. Most software asks buyers for a leap of faith, since the payoff comes months later. With North, savings show up almost immediately.

Three years in, North manages close to $2 billion in cloud spend and has saved customers over $400 million. Companies like AssemblyAI, Unqork, Tines, Atlan, SnapLogic, Emplifi, and Imply rely on us as they grow.

Now, we want to 10x all of it. We work with hundreds of customers today, and we want to reach 2,000. There’s still no VMware for cloud optimization, no single platform every company trusts. We want North to be that platform.

With this round, we’ll have the tools to evolve our product, grow our team, and reach more companies:

  • Product: We’ll keep expanding North’s capabilities. That means deeper automation, more integrations, and tools to govern AI spend. We already have a standout product, and we’re raising the bar from here.
  • Team and culture: We’ll keep growing the team that defines North. That includes more great engineers and a product organization we’ve built from scratch.
  • Presence: Most of our customers find us through marketing, so we’ll invest more there. We want North to be synonymous with automating and managing infrastructure spend. And we want the world to know our name.

We see fundraising as a way to accelerate, so choosing the right partner mattered. PeakSpan made sense early on. Their people are smart, they work hard, and they think big about what North can be. It was critical for me to bring in someone who saw the same big, long picture we see, and that was PeakSpan from day one.

Many of our earlier investors also wrote another check this round, and some are more passionate about North now than when they started. For a founder, that’s the ultimate compliment. It’s also a big responsibility, because we want to prove them right.

Thank you to PeakSpan for leading this round, and to Litquidity Ventures, Alpaca, Uncommon Denominator, Gaingels, and Mana Ventures for joining it. A special thank you to Companyon Ventures, who led our Series A and invested again.

We’ve come a long way from my garage. We’ve built a team and product we’re proud of, and now we have the funding to chase a championship. For us, that means becoming the best company in our category, by a wide margin.
