We are super excited to announce the availability of flexible savings for AWS DynamoDB on North.

Flexible DynamoDB savings has been, for months, one of our most requested services. We are excited to bring this to market. Customers using DynamoDB have the option to run on-demand or with provisioned capacity units, known as RCUs/WCUs (read or write capacity units). Those running provisioned capacity, can choose to commit to steady usage for 1 or 3 years in exchange for discounting vs paying on-demand rates. With reserved capacity, usage in a given hour will be priced at the discounted rates up to the max commitment in RCUs or WCUs per hour, capacity used after those limits are charged at the hourly on-demand level, each hour.

However, predicting exactly how much throughput you will be using 1 or 3 years in advance from now, is incredibly difficult. That's where North comes in.

Via North, clients can see analytics on spend & usage levels of DynamoDB. North will quickly analyze how much commitment to start with, while modeling out long term savings & ROI. The best part? You can now purchase with peace of mind knowing that if usage levels change, North can adjust coverage to ensure optimal savings.

Q: How can I tell- how much I will save?

A: The North app homepage will now show available savings for DynamoDB in the available savings box, under reserved instances.

Q: If my DynamoDB usage surge at certain times of the month, is it best to cover only the steady usage, or the full usage for the month's total?

A: DynamoDB reserved capacity is applied on an hourly basis, so our app (and our team) would suggest to only cover the steady usage level. Surges in usage that don't last the majority of the month should be paid for as on-demand.

Q: What type of savings can I expect with North?

A: North’s flexible DynamoDB savings are powered by 3-year partial upfront reserved capacity. The app will model your upfront payment, and ROI point (vs how you are buying DynamoDB today). See below for an example. Any unused reservations, and their subsequent remaining unblended costs can be handed back to North to upkeep optimal savings & flexibility.

Q: How do I get set up with DynamoDB savings?

A: If you’re a current North customer, just go to the homepage, and click subscribe! If not, go to app.north.cloud and create your free account!

Q: Is there any cost for this?

A: Flexible RIs are included as part of North’s Premier version which has a monthly fee, see our pricing page for more details.
